“That’s the coolest formula ever — it’s very reassuring!”

The DCTree is so organized and structured. We operate like a well oiled machine and the project is only in its youth — and it’s all thanks to our open minds and incredable team.  This type of networking has existed forever, but is only now starting to surface with the newest generation’s technology.  The implications are overwhelming and exciting, or at least they should be if you’re going to be a chiropractor and own a small business!

All we did was make a couple of changes to the technology available today, and we’ve made major shifts in understanding the chiropractic profession and it’s constructs.  From complex neurological protocols to whole brain balance, everything is becoming a functional model…everything is progressing further.

We identify parts of a system that need to be tweaked.  The changes we make can cause radical shifts down the road.  Stop using your processing resources to over-think the things that happened before your time, or the things you’ve left behind you.  You have to embrace what’s going on in FRONT of you to make your dreams come true.

If you try to be less, and do less, that’s not progression.  It’s about being more creative and more interactive. You have to ENGAGE in your lifework, for it to amount to anything more than a job.

Today’s DC students are not fearing change, they’re expecting change.  They are actually demanding change.

It’s pretty cool.

So You’ve Chosen A “Career”

I just have to look at the dictionary to be sure of what I write hereCareer– the course or progress of one’s life or lifework.  We tend to use the word career often and while we seem to have the right usage, it appears to me that we sell it far short of a complete meaning or application. Most often we hear it used as “chosen work”. Current concepts with regards to life and work is that most people will have 5 different careers in their lifetime. Anybody else see the misuse here? Our lifework is fast becoming a question of commitment.

When we look at the definition of career, the words which stand out for me are – “life” and “lifework”. It doesn’t say time period of work or current job. I clearly remember the “jobs” I had while attending Chiropractic College. They served a higher purpose, which was to earn enough money to allow me to continue in pursuit of my lifework – “Chiropractic”. I remember the challenges of the last two years of college – remember now this was before student loans, of working at three jobs, plus clinic, plus regular college courses. Looking back I would call this a serious pursuit. I think about the 50% of the class who dropped out over the years and wonder if they found a career in their lives. I know of a DC who took 8 years to complete the 4 year program – more power to him as I’m sure it would have been easier to drop out. He had a vision of his lifework and nothing was going to stop him from achieving it.
Many make the mistake of assuming that just because they have found their career, for the rest of their lives, the water will just flow downhill and all will be easy. I can guarantee this – there will be water shortages, flow blockages, floods and other diversions along the river bed; some so large that the downhill flow will seem to stop and you will find yourself in the middle of a great lake. Do not stop the forward motion; do not forget the intent of your career! At the end of the lake you will find the outlet and probably the ride of your life.If you are paying attention, you will have noticed that I slipped in the “INTENT” word. If you have had the good fortune and awareness to find your “CAREER” then you will find that along with this has come a clear understanding of the “INTENT” of the process. The mere fact that it is your “Lifework” suggests that there must be a level of intent or desired outcome involved.

Chiropractic has provided me that greatest of opportunity, to express a value of my life and I am thankful and humbled in its gifts. When I talk to others about Chiropractic I continually have a thought running in the background of the discussion; the thought being – If these people could only experience what incredible results Chiropractic has had for the people under care, they would literally “stand” in awe and respect. Children becoming responsive human beings, chronic illness disappearing, people regaining the ability to walk, asthma disappearing, and the list goes on. We in Chiropractic know these results because we have experienced these wondrous things.

Because we stayed the course and never lost sight of our lifework, our career. Part of any career is founded on the necessity of “earning a living” but if that is the only consideration then sadly it will not be a very fulfilling career. There will never be enough money to add up to the value of helping others; the personal value of what you do to enrich other’s lives. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have created a foundation to help people but in order to do this they had to build a career of making money first. This is the difference between a “job” and a “career”.

The job of making money (pursuit) versus a career of helping others (Higher purpose).  As a Chiropractor, or Chiropractic staff or Chiropractic advocate you have the opportunity to get the human value return by just offering chiropractic care.
How does it get any better than this!

The Vaccination Dilemma

Americans are the most vaccinated people on the planet.  And the sickest!  Nearly half of the people in the United States suffer from at least one chronic illness.

“Nearly half of Americans suffer at least one chronic disease, everything from allergies to heart disease – 20 million more than doctors had anticipated this year, researchers say. And they warn that the fast-growing toll, now at 125 million among a population of 276 million, will reach 157 million by 2020. One-fifth of Americans have two or more chronic illnesses. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” (Associated Press Nov 29, 2000)

Chronic illnesses include cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, allergies, asthma, autism, Alzheimer’s, learning disorders, attention deficit disorder and many, many others.  Most of these diseases were rare or non-existent before mass vaccination.

Is there a relationship between chronic disease and vaccination?  The evidence increasingly says “yes!”

First let’s ask, “What are we doing when we vaccinate?”  Vaccines inject microorganisms, (or their parts) and toxic chemicals deep into the body. That is a completely unnatural procedure.   Why?

Because diseases contracted naturally are ordinarily filtered through a series of immune system defenses. – the nasopharynx, mucus membranes, gastrointestinal tract, various lymphoid tissues – but when the vaccine virus is injected directly into the child’s blood stream it gains access to all of the major tissues and organs of the body without the body’s normal advantage of a total immune response.  The immune system is bypassed.

When we prevent the body from externalizing poisons, that is, prevent it from having an acute reaction with fever, malaise, skin eruptions, vomiting, diarrhea and the like, we drive disease deeper into the body where it is difficult or impossible for the individual to externalize it.

Instead of a relatively brief and mild (rarely dangerous) acute infectious disease (measles, mumps, chicken-pox, pertussis etc.) we create deep, long-term, life-long chronic illness, illness that never resolves.  Illness that lasts one’s entire life.

For thousands of year the Empirical or “Vitalist” approach to health asserted that when the symptoms of acute illness are suppressed, chronic illness is the result.  This has been observed by allopathic physicians as well as natural physicians by some of the greatest minds of their day.

“To check and suppress acute diseases means to suppress Nature’s purifying and healing efforts, and to change the acute constructive reactions into chronic disease conditions.” Henry Lindlahr, MD

“The greatest part of all chronic disease is created through the suppression of acute disease by means of drug poisons and through the destructive effects of the drugs themselves.”  Sir William Osler

“Cancer, tuberculosis, Bright’s Disease, and all chronic diseases were once innocent colds.” J. H. Tilden, MD

“Diseases are crises of purification, of toxic elimination. Symptoms are the natural defences of the body. We call them diseases, but in fact they are the cure of diseases.” Hippocrates

By the time a child is 18 months old they are to be injected with forty five vaccines!  By the time the child reaches school age (4-6 years) that number jumps to eighty-one different vaccines, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Yet, there is no proof that vaccines have eliminated any childhood disease and nor is there any proof that vaccines are responsible for the decrease in death from childhood diseases.  The death rate from these diseases had been decreasing for decades before the vaccine were in use. Ivan Illich, Ph.D. the famous sociologist writes:

The combined death rate from scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough, and measles among children up to fifteen shows that nearly 90% of the total decline in mortality between 1860 and 1965 occurred before the introduction of antibiotics and widespread immunization.

In part this recession may be attributed to improved housing and to a decrease in the virulence of micro-organisms, but by far the most important factor was a higher host resistance due to better nutrition.

The professional practice of physicians cannot be credited with the elimination of old forms of mortality or morbidity, nor should it be blamed for the increased expectancy of life spent in suffering from the new diseases. (Medical Nemesis, Chapter 1-The Epidemics of Modern Medicine By Ivan Illich, Ph.D. (Bantam Books: New York 1976))

The world of vaccination appears to be based more on belief than on science.  When viewed longitudinally (that is, over along period of time) the recipients of vaccination appear to develop serious chronic health conditions.  For example, the famed Hugh Fudenberg, M.D. says the following:

The chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease is ten times higher if an individual has had five consecutive flu shots. (National Vaccine Information Center’s First International Conference on Vaccination, September 1997, Arlington, Virginia)

Is this the reason why Alzheimer’s is expected to quadruple in the next few years? (Johns Hopkins Health Newsletter, Nov. 1998)

(Note: Dr. Fudenberg is the world’s leading immunogeneticist. His books are used as texts in medical schools throughout the world.  He is the 13th most quoted biologist in the world.  He has developed a method of reversing autism using a “blood cleansing” compound known as transfer factor.)

Dr. Fudenberg is of the opinion that the cause of the brain damage from the flu shot is most likely the mercury in the vaccine.  Mercury has an affinity for brain tissue.  In addition to flu vaccine, mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde are present in childhood vaccines.  No, mercury is still in many shots in “trace” amounts which are still harmful.

Non-vaccinated children are healthier and happier than vaccinated children.  One reason is because they are permitted to get sick naturally and get well naturally. As Philip Incao, MD writes

One of the best ways to ensure your children’s health is to allow them to get sick. At first hearing, this concept may sound outrageous. Yet childhood illnesses may be of key benefit to a child’s developing immune system and it may be inadvisable to suppress these illnesses with immunizations.

Chiropractors have been in the vanguard of the movement to permit the natural healing abilities of the body to function as they are meant to function.  That means not interfering with symptoms; they are nature’s way of externalizing, cleansing and purifying the body.  That also means that we should remove anything which interferes with our body function – such as subluxations.

Tedd Koren, DC is the author of Childhood Vaccinations: Questions all Parents Should Ask which comes with a 50 minute audio CD. It is available from (800-537-3001) along with many other vaccination and health-related materials.  Dr. Koren has also developed a Vaccination Lecture Kit for professionals and non-professionals to use to lecture on this subject.

The Growth and Challenges of Neurologically Based Chiropractic. (NBC)

As little as 10 years ago, any statement including the nervous system and Chiropractic started and ended with nerve root compression and vertebral misalignment.  We were well schooled that Chiropractic was about vertebral subluxation and nerve root interference and unfortunately, this is where the story ended. Vertebral subluxation and its correction was the totality of Chiropractic.

The facts however were not in evidence to support this theory. Even after over 100 years of the Chiropractic profession’s attempts to defend this position, the science was not in place to offer support.

The fact accepted in place was that Chiropractic care not only achieved results, it was known to achieve dramatic results far beyond the relief of pain for which it had become known.  As Chiropractic and Medicine are different in intent and application, the research methods for one do not work well when applied to the other. The double blind controlled studies of drug research do not work well when applied to a vitalistic application. So then how do we measure the effectiveness of Chiropractic? This challenge has been at the center of the Chiropractic dilemma since its beginning in 1895.

The profession was in great need of demonstrating its foundations in modern, supported definitions, terminology and science if it was to survive beyond a back pain relief, marginal healing art.

Throughout the Chiropractic history there has been many references to Chiropractic involving the Central Nervous System (CNS); so while the concepts were suggested, there was never any proof offered beyond the vertebral subluxation theory, which has never been proven to exist.

In the year 2000, I started the concept of Neurologically Based Chiropractic (NBC) in which I originated the concept that the power of the Chiropractic adjustment lay in its ability to alter CNS function – specifically the cortical brain wave patterns.  My three years of research working with EEG specialists and psychologists Drs. Long and Byers produced a research paper showing that the adjustment had dramatic effects on altering brain wave patterns. Once this was revealed, the greatest mystery of Chiropractic was exposed.  The chiropractic adjustment is a neurological pattern interrupt which then allows the CNS to reset itself into a more appropriate or healthier pattern. There has been two following papers that support my paper.

All this is great news except for one major problem.  How can this knowledge be applied to everyday practice? X-Ray studies or orthopedic tests don’t offer any supporting outcome evidence; Static Para spinal sEMG or thermal studies don’t show direct neurological improvement at the CNS level. So how can we show the dramatic effect of a Chiropractic adjustment as evidence of the effectiveness of care?

This is the reason why the NeuroInfiniti instrument came into being. The years of research done by the Psychologists studying brain wave patterns and human behavior plus the great advances in computer based programs in CNS function were a perfect match for the need to show the effectiveness of the adjustment to alter brain function.

Thirteen years later, the work is finally starting to affect the profession. The NeuroInfiniti offers the DCs the ability to show less than ideal brain function in response to stress and/or its ability to recover from stress. These patterns create the health challenges we see today that according to medical research attribute to 95% of all diseases.  Today Chiropractors can show how and why the adjustment improves neurological function. This NBC isn’t the Chiropractic of the past and represents a critical breakthrough as important as we have seen in any of the changes in other healing arts. Neurologically based programs such as the advanced work by the Carrick Institute, and Dr. Melillo’s Brain Balance Centers are an example of the new movement in the profession.

Neurology Clubs are springing up in Chiropractic Colleges as a new breed of students is keen to bring Chiropractic into the 21st century. As I speak to the student bodies at Universities/Colleges around the world, it is exciting times to watch the future of the profession prepare to bring Neurologically Based Chiropractic to life.  Be sure to check out the NeuroInfiniti web and Facebook sites

The Age of Brain Based Wellness

There are many forms of stress – physical stress, chemical stress and emotional stress. We even have stress subdivisions like relationship stress, money stress, time stress and work stress to name a few.

Stress is everywhere and no one is immune. When we are stressed, the sympathetic part of our brain goes into a natural and normal “fight or flight” mode necessary for our survival. What is equally normal and natural is for the sympathetic brain to reset and calm down after the stressful episode and recalibrate itself to achieve homeostasis and balance once again.

Unfortunately, when we are stressed all day, every day and over a long span of time without a normal relaxation response afterwards, we begin to create a significant and severe turn of events that ultimately produces brain imbalance, body imbalance and poor health.
According to the National Institute of Health, “Up to 90% of all illness is related to stress.” We currently live in a fast paced, high tech and high stressed world. Our stress levels today are much worse than just ten or twenty years ago, which is an indicator that we are entering the early stages of the worst epidemic of all time: The Neurologic Epidemic.

Ever growing lists of people are now suffering from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Autism, insomnia, Lupus, MS, acid reflux, IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, anxiety, migraines, depression and the list goes on and on. Traditional medicine unfortunately does not have answers for these problems because you cannot offer a drug correction to a lifestyle problem.

All forms of stress are in reality Brain Stress. Prolonged brain stress causes a sympathetic-parasympathetic imbalance creating a neurological cascade of events putting us in a Sympathetic Survival Syndrome. When we are in survival, our ability to heal, grow, learn and flourish is greatly reduced. It is estimated that more than 2 billion people worldwide are now suffering from brain based health challenges.
Here is what you need to know…When the brain is out of balance; the body will unfortunately follow and go out of balance as well. However, when the brain is once again balanced, the body will fortunately follow and rebalance. This is why understanding what brain based wellness is and learning effective ways to rebalance our brain is so important to all of us.

Prolonged stress, without the appropriate relaxation response, will cause a weakening of the heart, shrinkage of the brain and inflammation which prevents the formation of new nerve cells. We must come to realize that all sickness, disease and behavioral problems begin with brain imbalance as a result of chronic stress.

So how does one rebalance their brain? How do we reboot and re-harmonize brain function? Here are some of the more effective answers:

1. Deep and regular meditation
2. Proper rhythmic breathing where our expiration lasts for twice as long as our inspiration
3. Being in nature, outdoors and relaxed
4. Belly laughter
5. Some forms of exercise like walking
6. Some forms of light and sound technology designed to balance brain function
7. Effective chiropractic care

Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Roger Sperry stated that the spine is the motor that drives the brain. According to his research, “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.”
The new story of chiropractic, backed up with research and new technology, tells us that the chiropractic adjustment does far more than relieve nerve pressure; it actually normalizes and maximizes brain function.

New research can now document for the doctor of chiropractic where to adjust, when to adjust, how often to adjust and even how gentle to adjust the patient to reboot, rewire, reset, rebalance and restore equilibrium in brain and then body function.
It is important to recognize that chiropractic is a neuro-musculoskeletal science and has been for well over 100 years and that today’s chiropractic doctor sees themselves as a functional neurologist – fully understanding how a patient’s lifestyle decisions impact neurologic and brain function and how to naturally and effectively restore balance and help that patient achieve health, wellness and vitality so that they age gracefully instead of growing old.

It is so important to align the brain and the body. Your brain is the control system of the body. Brain balance and harmony is essential to overall well-being and optimal cognitive, emotional and physical performance. Once the brain is balanced, the body always follows. This condition of harmony is known as homeostasis. One you achieve homeostasis, you will enjoy new states of self regulation and relaxation, allowing you to think more clearly, perform more successfully and experience a higher degree of hope and happiness.
